Rachel Meginnes

Rachel Meginnes is currently a resident artist at Penland School of Crafts in Western North Carolina. She received her MFA in Fibers from the University of Washington, Seattle in 2005 and her BA, focusing on textiles, from Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana in 1999. Following two years in Northern Japan studying traditional textiles, Rachel spent time in New Zealand working with wool production. Returning to the United States, she completed a year-long apprenticeship as a rug weaver and dyer in Northeastern Maine. She then began her first rug design business producing handwoven rugs for home interiors. In 2003, Rachel entered graduate school and in 2005 co-founded the international rug company Dorjé Contemporary. Rachel worked with architects and interior designers producing custom-designed, commissioned carpets for residential and commercial spaces. 2010 marked a significant shift in Rachel’s career when she returned to making her own artwork full time. After working from her studio in San Francisco for two years, Rachel relocated to North Carolina where she is now exploring the intersection between textiles and painting.

Description

Trained as a weaver, my paintings are rooted in the alteration of structures and materials. Employing traditional textile techniques at a variety of scales, my pieces pay homage to patience, labor, and discipline. My work reflects an internal contemplation of self and an external meditation on daily life experienced through a series of upset systems, built and torn down surfaces, and a unification of opposing sides. Striking a balance between ruin and discovery while forging uncommon relationships of color, form, and texture are the driving forces behind my work.
